Grassroots study by young Belizeans helps to fight Child Labour. Belize has given insights into the experience of young cane cutters in the Central American country and presented recommendations to address child labour and protection.

World Day Against Child Labour Day is acknowledged every June 12th of every year. It is a day to create awareness and Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association celebrates its 3rd Annual Event to Observe World Day Against Child Labour under the theme “Generation Safe and Healthy.” Our commitment has always been to create safety, protection and increase the well-being of youths and children in our sugarcane farming communities. This year it was celebrated at the Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College “Hugo J. Gonzalez Auditorium” whereby primary schools were invited along with representatives from BSI/ASR, SIRDI, Child Development Foundation, Labour Department, CEMJC Dean, Ministry of Education, Youths from CEMJC and cane farmers.  We are grateful to our supporters and everyone who were present and observed together World Day Against Child Labour 2018.

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association actively participates at the EU/AMS "Accompanying Measures for Sugar" Farmer Family Day- which was held at SIRDI on February 24th, 2018.

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association held its Annual General Meeting on November 26th, 2017 at the Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico Auditorium  

The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association collaborated and supported the San Estevan Lion’s Club on August 20, 2017 that held their 3rd Annual called “Diabetes Awareness Stride”. This event started off with an early morning walk at 6:00 a.m. around the community and it ended at the Lion’s Den. After, people talked about the causes and preventative measures taken to combat Diabetes. This year, the group visited people in the community of San Estevan who suffer from diabetes and gave them a fruit salad to spread healthy awareness.

ENSURING A JUST PARTICIPATION BY SUGAR CANE FARMERS IN THE SUGAR CANE INDUSTRY

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association celebrated "World Day Against Child Labor" at the San Pablo Government School based on the theme- " In conflicts and disasters, protect children from child labor". The children from the school were invited to attend an activity to become aware about Child Labor and get informed about the negative impact of children's involvement in hazardous and forced labor. The children were provided with a pamphlet that defined what is child labor and laws applicable to the sugar cane production. It also comprised the list of the worst forms of child labor and BSCFA's Child Labor Policy. At the end of the activity, children were quizzed on specific questions related to Child Labor and those that responded correctly were rewarded with small prices.

The Government of Belize, with support from the European Union has established a "Consultancy to Research on Child Labor and Youth Well-being in the Sugar Industry of Belize." The Child Development Foundation and the Youth Enhancement Services to Implement the consultancy. The project launch ceremony and workshops was held on Monday, April 10th, 2017 at Gala Lounge in Orange Walk Town.

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers participated at the Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College Open Day on April 6th, 2017. The topics of interest demonstrated that day were: varieties of cane, maturity test, old practices of how cane was harvested, basic information on Personal Protective Equipment and the Importance of Water and First Aid Kit. They were also distributing free sugar cane salpicon and had games for the children to enjoy.

Fairtrade Applauds Efforts to Step Up the Fight Against Child Labour in Belize

The government of Belize has taken action to address child labour in the country, thanks in part to the advocacy efforts and targeted public awareness campaigns by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCA).

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association held its Annual General Meeting on November 27, 2016.  

Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association collaborates with Centro Escolar Mexico and underwent a school zone mapping with the youths from Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico High School. This was done to incorporate what the trainees had learnt and to identify the areas that students consider unsafe for them in the school zone.
